An assist rewards the passer whose final pass directly leads to a made basket. Interpretation varies slightly by league: the NBA historically counts assists more generously than FIBA.
It's the signature stat for point guards. A starting NBA point guard typically averages 6 to 9 assists per game. The greatest passers (Stockton, Magic, Nash, Paul) exceeded 10 APG across multiple seasons.
Be careful not to overread it: assists also depend on the quality of finishers around you. A point guard on a poor shooting team will see volume drop, even if they create just as many chances.
On HoopsTrackR, every assist is logged live or post-game, and the per-game total aggregates automatically into season APG.
Real example
A point guard dishing 56 assists across 7 games averages 8 APG.
