Small Forward(SF)

The 3, a versatile medium-tall player who can operate both on the perimeter and inside.

The small forward, or the 3, is the most versatile player in the standard lineup. Height ranges from 6'5" to 6'9". They combine length, speed, shooting, and finishing near the rim. It's the most sought-after profile in modern basketball.

Historically, the 3 has produced some of basketball's greatest stars: Larry Bird, Julius Erving, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard. Their versatility lets them dominate offensively and defensively across every matchup.

Modern small forwards are expected to deliver on three pillars: reliable three-point shooting (above 35%), ability to drive to the rim, and defense across multiple positions (switchability). It's the evolved "3&D" profile: a player who can score in iso and defend positions 1 through 4.

The line with the power forward (the 4) is shrinking. Many modern teams play "small ball" with a small forward at the 4 to gain speed and spacing.

Real example

A 6'8" small forward guards a quick point guard then switches onto a center in the paint on the same possession.
