Blocks (BLK)(BLK)

Opponent shots legally deflected or stopped while still on their upward trajectory toward the basket.

A block is a spectacular defensive play: the defender stops or deflects an opponent's shot on its way up. To count, the block must happen before the ball begins its downward arc, otherwise it's goaltending in the shooter's favor.

Statistically, it's the domain of bigs. An elite rim protector like Rudy Gobert or Anthony Davis averages more than 2.5 BLK per game. Hakeem Olajuwon and Dikembe Mutombo hold the best career block averages.

But not all blocks are equal. A block that sails out of bounds is a flattering stat but creates no possession change. The best kind of block stays in play and lets your team recover the ball.

HoopsTrackR logs your blocks each game and displays them alongside your rebounds and steals in a unified defensive view.

Real example

A center blocks 3 shots in a game: 2 that stay in play for a teammate and 1 that goes out of bounds. Their BLK total is 3.
