The center, or the 5, is a team's interior anchor. Minimum height 6'9", often above 6'11". Historical mission: protect the paint, grab rebounds, set screens, score at the rim. It's basketball's most physical position.
Classic archetypes: the defensive center (Rudy Gobert, Bill Russell) who lives on blocks and rebounds. The low-post scorer (Shaquille O'Neal, Hakeem Olajuwon) who dominates the block. The playmaking center (Nikola Jokic) who runs offense from the high post like a guard.
Modern basketball has redefined the 5. The "switchable 5" who can defend a point guard on a switch has become a playoff necessity. The "stretch 5" who shoots threes (Brook Lopez, Myles Turner) opens spacing that's impossible to cover.
Victor Wembanyama represents the new frontier: a 7'4" center with guard touch, point-guard vision, and elite rim protection instincts. The 5 has never offered as many archetypes as today.
Real example
A center stops an opposing point guard's drive by blocking their shot at the rim, then outlets to start a fast break.
