eFG% fixes a fundamental flaw in regular FG%: it treats 3-point and 2-point shots as equivalent. But a 3-pointer is worth 50% more points, so statistical logic requires adjusting.
In practice, a player who makes 5 shots on 10 with 3 three-pointers has an eFG% of 65%, versus 50% for regular FG%. This better reflects their actual scoring contribution.
eFG% has become a standard of modern analytics, especially for comparing players with very different shot profiles (a three-point shooter vs a rim slasher). The NBA league average historically sits around 53-54%.
It's an excellent first efficiency indicator — fairer than FG% but simpler than TS%, which adds free throws to the equation.
Formula
eFG% = ((FGM + 0.5 × 3PM) / FGA) × 100Real example
A player making 5 shots on 10 with 3 threes: eFG% = ((5 + 0.5 × 3) / 10) × 100 = 65%.
